In today’s world, it is common for individuals to carry a smartphone or tablet. There are numerous applications available that can be helpful when travelling to China. China is on the verge of becoming a cashless society, although cash is still in circulation. Many Chinese citizens now rely solely on digital payment methods for their daily transactions. In China, you can use apps to order meals, hail taxis, book tickets, and even open doors. This article lists several apps that will be useful for your trip to China. We recommend downloading and becoming familiar with them before your arrival.

WeChat

WeChat, also known as “Weixin” in Chinese, combines the functions of Facebook, LinkedIn, Uber, Instagram, and other apps. WeChat is an essential app for many Chinese people to connect with the world.  With over 1.2 billion monthly users, it is China’s most popular messaging app. In addition to messaging, WeChat offers a range of features, including payments, flight and hotel bookings, and mini-programs, which are apps within the platform.

Alipay

Alipay is the leading payment app in China and can be used for purchasing goods and services, direct transfers, bill payments, and other functions. It connects directly to the user’s Chinese bank account to facilitate payments and transfers. Prior to 2019, a Chinese bank card was required to use Alipay for payments. However, since November 2019, international travelers to China can sign up and obtain a 90-day pass to use the service. You can add funds in increments of 100 yuan up to a maximum of 2000 yuan per transaction. Additional top-ups are available if necessary.

Only three steps are required to start using Alipay. Firstly, download the Alipay app onto your smartphone from the app store and sign up for an account. Signing up is free. Next, add and save your credit and debit card details within your account to start making mobile payments. Then, verify your identity, phone number, and bank information. Finally, use the app to download and purchase prepaid cards using your international credit or debit card.

Google Translate

The Google Translate app is one of the best language translation apps available for Android and iOS. It offers a variety of useful features, including an image translation option. Users can take a photo of a sign, piece of paper, or other written text and receive a translation in their preferred language.

MetroMan

When travelling in China, it is recommended to utilise the underground or subway system. However, it is important to note that the system may be more intricate than those found in other cities around the world. Fortunately, there are accurate metro maps available for 27 cities in China (as well as some cities elsewhere) and detailed information that includes a journey planner, routes, times, and fares. Ensure you download it before leaving so that you can use it offline wherever you go without an internet connection.

Didi- Rider

Didi is the Chinese equivalent of Uber. Although not the only ride-hailing app available, it is the most widely used and has a convenient English version. If you have used Uber before, using Didi should not be difficult. Simply enter your pick-up location that corresponds to your GPS position. Next, enter your destination using the address in either English or Chinese characters, and select your ride type.

Railway 12306

The China Railway Customer Service Center created the only official app for booking China train tickets. This app shares the same data as the official ticket booking website 12306.cn, including user data, bookings, and ticket availability. With this app, users can make reservations, payments, change tickets, refund tickets, track orders, manage contacts, and change passwords all in one place.

MoBike

The bike-sharing industry is rapidly growing worldwide, with its origins in China. MoBike is among the many apps that allow users to easily rent a shared bike.  Bikes are available throughout most Chinese cities, on nearly every street corner.The first few rides are free, and after that, each ride costs CNY1. A CNY200 deposit is required, but it can be refunded.

VPN

Google, Facebook, and other popular Western apps and websites are inaccessible in China. To gain access to these apps or websites, you require a VPN or Virtual Private Network. ExpressVPN is a VPN server that offers the best combination of ease-of-use, fast servers, and supports streaming media and torrenting, all at a reasonable price. ProtonVPN is a VPN service operated by the Swiss company Proton Technologies AG, the company behind the email service ProtonMail. According to their website, they provide a free version of ProtonVPN to the public. Unlike other free VPNs, there are no hidden catches. They do not display ads or sell your browsing history without your knowledge.

Baidu Maps

Google Maps is not available in China, but Baidu Maps can be used instead. Baidu Maps are known for their accuracy and up-to-date information. They offer a sophisticated map search with a 3D option, public transport routes with accurate waiting times, traffic conditions, and a heat map function that shows busy areas within the city. Pin your favourite venues and mark them on the map to keep track of your location while exploring.

XE Currency

XE Currency is the best mobile app for currency conversion, providing live exchange rates, historical charts, and price calculations. You can even download selected currencies for offline use.
